A round fort in the park
Fort Anioła was built by the Prussian army in 1854-1858. At its heart is a three-storey round rotunda topped with a terrace and an observation tower, surrounded by earth ramparts. In the 19th century about a hundred soldiers were stationed here, and the fort defended the western part of the fortress from the landward side. Its round shape recalls Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, hence the name.
What you will see today
- Exhibitions in the fort’s old halls, including a navigation room with historic instruments, a Viking room and displays on military history, plus temporary exhibitions.
- A roof terrace with a rose garden, a quiet spot for a short break among the trees of Park Zdrojowy.
- A café in the former fireplace hall, especially cosy on cooler days.
The fort is on the same side of the Świna as the centre and the beach, so it is easy to drop in on your way to the sea. Together with the West Fort it forms the Fort trail walk, which ends at Stawa Młyny.
Exhibitions, opening hours and prices change with the season. Check them on the fort’s website before you visit.
