Practical tips for cyclists

  • The tunnel is not for bikes. Cyclists and pedestrians may not use the tunnel under the Świna. You cross the river on the free Bielik ferry (Warszów crossing), which takes cyclists. Off-season, when a bus takes over some of the ferry crossings, bikes are carried through the tunnel by a special vehicle with a trailer.
  • Velo Baltica. The Polish section of the Velo Baltica route (EuroVelo 10) starts in Świnoujście and runs east along the coast.
  • The German side. Cycling is not allowed on the promenade in Ahlbeck; cyclists have a separate, signposted path there. The resorts on the German side charge a spa tax (Kurtaxe); check the rules for day visitors on each resort's website.
  • Train with a bike. The UBB railway runs across the German part of the island from Świnoujście Centrum station, so you can finish a longer ride by train. Check the rules for taking bikes with the operator.
