About the route
A loop for those who already know the promenade and want to see another side of Usedom: forests, fields and quiet villages on the Szczecin Lagoon. From Świnoujście you ride south-west across the border to Golm hill, then to Kamminke on the lagoon, and return via Ahlbeck and the coastal path.
Golm: a memorial site
On Golm hill, the highest point on Usedom, lies the largest war cemetery in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is the resting place of the victims of the American air raid on Świnoujście on 12 March 1945, many of them civilians and refugees who were waiting in the town to be evacuated by ship. Since 2000 the site has been cared for by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund), and a small pavilion houses an exhibition on the region’s wartime history.
Kamminke
A fishing village on the Szczecin Lagoon with a small harbour, a viewpoint looking towards Świnoujście and a fish smokehouse right on the jetty. The best place for a break before the ride back: we write more about the harbour and where to eat fish on the Kamminke page.
