About the route
A walk for those who already know the promenade and want to see Usedom from the lagoon side. From the seaside district you walk south-west through the town, along ul. Grunwaldzka to the border and then up a forest track to Golm hill. From there it is downhill all the way to Kamminke, a small fishing village with the harbour at its heart.
Fishing boats moor in the harbour, and in season yachts and motor boats too. Ahead of you lies the wide expanse of the Szczecin Lagoon, and across the water you can see Świnoujście, where you have just come from. The mood is completely different from the seaside: instead of breaking waves and a crowded promenade, there is quiet, reeds and the smell of smoked fish.
What you will see along the way
- Golm, the highest hill on Usedom island, with a war cemetery and a memorial to the victims of the air raid on Świnoujście on 12 March 1945.
- The viewpoint in the middle of the village, looking out over the lagoon and Świnoujście.
- The fishing harbour with its jetty, boats and a fish smokehouse right on the pier.
The reward at the end
At the smokehouse on the pier the fish is smoked on site. A fish roll at a table sheltered from the wind, with a view of the water, is the best reason to come here. There is also a café by the harbour and, a few minutes away, an inn serving German food. Read more about the harbour on the Kamminke page.
Practical tips
- One way is about 8.5 km, there and back over 17 km. If you do not want to walk back, do the same trip by bike: we describe it as the Loop via Golm and Kamminke.
- On the German side you pay in euros.
- Opening hours of the smokehouse and café depend on the season and the weather. Outside summer, check them before you set off.
