Usedom, Germany, just across the border

Kamminke: a fishing harbour on the lagoon

A fishing village just across the border on the Szczecin Lagoon. A small harbour with fishing boats, fish smoked on the jetty, a viewpoint looking towards Świnoujście and Golm hill next door. About 6.5 km from the centre by bike.

Why go

Kamminke is one of the oldest fishing villages on Usedom, first recorded on a map from 1618. About 250 people live here. Some of the houses stand on cliffs more than 20 metres high above the Szczecin Lagoon, and the heart of the village is a small harbour where fishing boats moor, along with yachts and motorboats in season.

The atmosphere is completely different from the seaside resorts: silence, the wide expanse of the lagoon and the smell of smoked fish. Kamminke is just across the border, which makes it one of the nicest short trips from Świnoujście.

What to see

  • The fishing harbour: boats, a jetty and a view over the Szczecin Lagoon.
  • The viewpoint in the middle of the village, looking towards Świnoujście and the lagoon.
  • The lagoon beach with a gentle slope into the water, suitable for small children too.
  • Golm hill (71 m above sea level) with a war cemetery and a memorial to the victims of the air raid on Świnoujście on 12 March 1945, about 2 km from the harbour.

Where to eat fish

Right on the jetty in the harbour is the Klönsnack fish smokehouse (Fischräucherei Kamminke). The fish is smoked on site, there are fish rolls, and in season fried fish too. The tables are sheltered from the wind with a view of the water. There is also a café by the harbour, and a few minutes away the Gasthaus Haffblick restaurant serving German food.

Opening hours in Kamminke depend on the season and the weather. If you are going outside the summer, check them before you set off.

How to get there

  • By bike: about 6.5 km from the centre of Świnoujście, through the forest towards the border. Kamminke is also a stop on our Loop via Golm and Kamminke route.
  • By car: about 11 km, a quarter of an hour’s drive. There is parking by the harbour.
  • On foot: about 8 km each way from the seaside district, so more of a long, full-day walk.
