Why it is worth it

The Lubin hillfort sits on the highest cliff on the shore of the Szczecin Lagoon, 43-52 metres above sea level. From its wooden viewing terraces there is a panorama you will not find anywhere else in the area: the Szczecin Lagoon, the marshy islands of the Świna backwater delta and Lake Wicko Wielkie. It is the best place to see from above the bird islands that in Świnoujście you can only watch from the shore.

A thousand years of history

The first settlement appeared here in the 9th or first half of the 10th century. The stronghold guarded the waterway from Szczecin via the Świna to the Baltic, and at the end of the 11th century it was surrounded by a defensive rampart. In the 12th century a church of St Nicholas, patron saint of fishermen and sailors, was built here. In 1124 Bishop Otto of Bamberg came here and consecrated its altar. The church is considered one of the oldest in Pomerania.

Archaeological excavations in 2008-2011 uncovered the foundations of the church and its churchyard. Coins were found too, including Arab dirhams from the mid-10th century, showing how far the settlement’s trading contacts reached.
