A resort since 1824

The spa and the resort

The first bathing season in 1824, a park designed by Lenné, the villas of the seaside district and spa status. How Świnoujście became a resort.

Park Zdrojowy in Świnoujście

The beginnings of the resort

The fashion for sea bathing reached Świnoujście in the early 19th century. The first bathing season opened in 1824, and the first spa house was built in 1826. Between the town and the sea grew the spa park (today’s Park Zdrojowy), designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, one of the most famous landscape architects in Prussia.

The seaside district

As the resort grew, a district of guesthouses and villas for summer visitors sprang up between the park and the beach: today’s seaside district. In 1895 Świnoujście was granted spa status.

The spa today

Świnoujście is still a spa town. You can see it every day in several places:

  • The 58-hectare Park Zdrojowy, which is a listed monument.
  • The graduation towers on the promenade, fed with brine from the Świnoujście spa, opened in 2020.
  • The spa fee charged by places to stay (we write about it in the Practical information section).

The spa fee

Świnoujście is a spa town, so visitors staying overnight pay a spa fee. Who pays it, who collects it and where to check the rate.
