A Prussian fortress on the Świna
Fort Gerharda, also known as the East Fort, was built in 1848-1859 as part of the fortifications guarding the entrance to the port. It was remodelled again in 1876-1877 and around the turn of the 20th century. It stands in Warszów on the island of Wolin, a few hundred metres from the lighthouse.
Of Świnoujście’s forts, this one is the best preserved: the brick walls, moats and grass-covered ramparts look as if the army had only just left.
The Coastal Defence Museum
Since 2010 the fort has housed the private Coastal Defence Museum, which has been open to visitors since 2011. The exhibitions tell the story of the Świnoujście fortress and coastal defence, from weapons and uniforms to barracks equipment. The tour leads through the casemates, the courtyard and along the ramparts.
Practical tips
- The fort is right next to the lighthouse, so it is best to visit both on the same day.
- Part of the tour is under cover and part on the ramparts, so bring comfortable shoes and something for the rain.
- The museum also runs other military sites in Świnoujście. You will find the current offer, opening hours and prices on the museum’s website.
