The border
Poland and Germany are both in the Schengen area, so you cross the border without checks: on foot along the promenade, by bike, by car or by train. Even so, it is worth carrying an ID card or passport.
Currency and payments
- In Świnoujście you pay in złoty, in Germany in euros.
- You can pay by card in most places on both sides of the border, but a little cash in both currencies is useful.
The UBB train
The Usedomer Bäderbahn links Świnoujście Centrum station with the German resorts on Usedom: Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, Bansin and beyond. A convenient way back from a walk or a bike ride. Check tickets and the rules for taking bikes with the operator.
Resort charges
- On the Polish side, places to stay charge the spa fee.
- The German resorts charge their own visitor tax (Kurtaxe). The guest card gives various discounts there, such as free boat trips between the piers. Check the rules for day visitors on the website of the resort in question.
Cycling is not allowed on the promenade in Ahlbeck. Cyclists have a separate, signposted path.
